Web design and font size selection for the site

Too small font of the main text used on the site can become one of the factors of pessimization of this site in search results, because today search engines pay much attention to the convenience of presenting site content on different types of devices. That is why the choice of font size for a site is one of the important tasks of web site design and requires a particularly thoughtful approach.

If the main font on the site is too small, users have to strain their eyes to read the text they need. Of course, not every user will want to do this, so many visitors will close the site with a small print as quickly as possible. In this case, of course, you can’t count on the effective operation of the site.

However, not only the increase in failure rates on the site can be the result of using a very small print. Because the font is too small, the site may even be lower than its competitors in important thematic keywords (ceteris paribus) due to the fact that search engines are currently struggling with the inconvenient presentation of content on sites.

For example, the search engine Google considers the small print on the site to be a serious obstacle for visitors and recommends that webmasters use large enough fonts so that users do not have to peer at the small font or resort to zooming in on the page. At the same time, Google’s webmasters are paying particular attention to mobile site visitors.

The fact is that even if the font looks large enough on the screen of a stationary PC or laptop, this does not mean that it will be easy to read on mobile devices (tablets, smartphones). After all, the font size is usually set by webmasters in pixels, the sizes of which depend on the screen size of the device and its resolution, and as a result, the same font size is read on the large screen conveniently, but not on the small one.

When designing a website’s website design, the webmaster can, of course, simply rely on the behavior of the mobile users themselves if they wish: to increase the scale of the website’s page displayed in the browser is not difficult, therefore, all visitors who find the font too small can still end up using the site. However, just such an approach is not recommended by the Google search system, considering that the site owners themselves should take care of the convenience of presenting content to site visitors.

To fix the problem, you need to understand that scaling fonts on the screens of mobile devices depends on several factors. In particular, settings for the viewing area on the site are very important for the correct display of font size: if the viewing area is not configured, the browser will not be able to correctly display the site, as a result of which the font will be too small to read. The viewport meta tag is used to configure the viewing area.

Another factor that plays an important role in choosing the font size for a site is the selection of the base font size. For example, the Google search engine recommends using a CSS font size of 16 pixels as a base font size (one of the font size units), since this is the size that displays fonts in browsers by default, when the webmaster does not set any values ​​for the font size in the body of the pages site or in CSS files. At the same time, fonts that are smaller or larger than the base one on Google’s website are advised to be set in relative units, for example, as a percentage, so that when automatically scaling the site’s pages for display on different devices, the fonts are scaled as correctly as possible.

It should be noted in conclusion that when developing a website’s web design, not only the font size is important, but also the number of different fonts used, as well as the font colors used. After all, if you make a mistake when developing a font scheme for a site, then the level of usability of the site may decrease, and this will negatively affect the overall performance of the site in the future.
